Hi all...I just have a quick questions that some of you may be able to help with.
I am 29 and just started school, one child and I work full time. After helping my wife get through nursing school, I decided to go back to school to become a DR. Question...with the end of my freshman year coming to an end, I belive that I will have a GPA of 2.7-2.9, do I have a chance of making it into med school?

I am not too sure of what all I will need to do, but I am determined to become a DR.

Any advice?

Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions.

Get good grades the rest of the time you're in college, and ace the MCAT. 😀

Did i see the word "determine"....

Hmmm....that is all you need my friend, determination. You could define determination by saying you will overcome any obstacles. So, you are not out of luck. Actually, almost all schools don't make your freshman gpa a big deal out of it....as long as you improve. Most Importantly, there is more to gaining an acceptance than gpa or mcat. Ever heard of students being accepted with 2.5gpa or even lower to medical school? No....well you just heard it.
Lastly, i think you still got an excellent chance. Maybe, i might be your colleague in the future.

Good luck.

For one you need to be getting like a 3.6 GPA and not what you are currently getting.

Congrats on your decision to go back to school! I can see how you must have a lot on your hands with everything going on in life. Don't worry about a 1st year with a 2.7 to 2.9 - you just need to keep on improving. As much as anyone will tell you, determination alone will not help (although if you have it, you start a step ahead of the game). What you need to do right now is assess your study habits/time. Sit back and look at your grades from this year and ask - did i not study enough? did i focus my studying energy too much on one section and not what was tested? did i take on too much at once? did i have too many distractions? (a full time job, school, and a family is a very large load!! you might not want to go full time until you get the swing of things and feel more comfortable) One great thing to do is to go and talk to your profs - at the beginning of a semester, before an exam, etc. This is tough because 1. if you work, you may not be able to see them during office hours (then catch them right after class, or ask if they'll meet at a different time) and 2. it hurts your ego to say you need to go to the prof. Another good thing to do is to make sure you get your readings done before class so you can sit back and take in what the teacher says more. You get more repetition and you can ask about what you don't understand. The final thing I'll suggest (ok don't flame me as being a suck up here - this is what we always advised our low gpa athletes/greek members) is to sit in the front row. It forces you to pay attention more and the teacher notices/interacts with you more. All the best of luck!!

You didn't say, but what sort of classes did you take this year? Since you've been out of school for awhile it takes a little time to rebuild those study skills.....especially for math and science. So long as you improve from now on, and get a good MCAT score I'm sure you'll be fine. Also, make sure you take advantage of your professors office hours and if you have tutoring centers take advantage of them! At our school we have a science learning center and a math learning center. The students that actually use these sources typically have a full grade better than those that don't. Whatever you do, don't give up on your dream yet - you've only begun your journey!

Good luck!
