A long time ago when I was young and irresponsible I quit an Ecology class halfway through the semester and the instructor didn't drop me from the roster, so I ended up with a big fat "F" 😱
Two years later, when I returned to school, I re-enrolled in the class and got an "A". My school leaves the "F" on my transcrips but calculates the "A" into my GPA.... I've gotten a 4.00 every semester since then. I will be transferring as a Junior to a UC or a private school in the Bay Area and I doubt that the credit from this class will be transferred over because it is irrelevant to my academic plan.
However, I've heard that the AMCAS requires you to submit your transcripts from ALL schools you've attended, then if you re-took a class it calculates your science gpa using an average between the two grades you got 🙁

Can anyone tell me if this is true? Or if I am transferring if they will even need my community college transcripts??

thanks!

Unfortunately, retakes count as totally separate grades. I just got screwed over by this. You'll be required to send it all of your transcripts.

Oh ****,
I have the same exact storry as the OP as well as a few (2 i think)withdrawals/drops, damn I'm screwed and I haven't even begun 😱

But these were non-science courses, that shouldn't be as bad... right? (plus I'm retaking them right now and have gotten nothing but A's)

I'll have to talk to the counselor

Withdrawals don't count, they don't correspond to any value on the 4.0 scale. They're just there. Don't worry about it. Just make sure you don't have too many of them throughout college.

Don't worry too much. I failed an entire semester 😱 and upon speaking with admissions staff at my state schools was told that improvement is a premium. And DON'T do it again.

I also have two F's because I stopped showing up to classes, I think it was mainly a depression stage I was going through. I'm kind of in one now (I was recently mugged, and beaten-up pretty badly) but I'm trying to the make the best of it.

Here's what I look like now:

Thanks for the encouragement! 😛
Do medical schools generally see your transcripts from AMCAS so that they can actually see the progressive improovement, or do they just get a number? 😕
Is there any sort of guide or website where I can find out more about this process?

Perhaps from the source itself?

I just got back from a premed conference in Sacramento where we heard the Deans of Admission from all the Northern california Med schools (Stanford, UC Davis, UCSF, etc)
They all emphasized the same thing....

THERE IS NO FORMULA for applying!
The only reason why #s matters so much is because they want to make sure that you are not an academic liability. Therefore, if you made one mistake long ago and have since prooved you are capable in much more advanced science classes, you have eased their concern.
And a human reads each and every application, allowing for consideration of improovement etc.

Yay! I feel so much better now! 😛

Sorry to hear that you got assaulted. Sounds like you're handling it pretty well, emotionally. This too shall pass. Best wishes. 👍

For a 3 credit class, say you got a D the first time, and an A the second time. That's 3 QPs (3 * 1) + 12 QPs (3 * 4) = 15 QPs, divided by 6 credits is 2.5 GPA for those two classes. So, in a sense they're averaged, but all the credits count.

Yep, this is how it works 🙁

No prob - I wish it were better news for you. You're probably not as bad off as you think (I'm at 5 interviews / 0 rejections so far this cycle with a 2.95 GPA) but you should know that the osteopathic school app, the AACOMAS, takes only the most recent grade of any repeated class, and ignores older grades. This can be a big swing compared to AMCAS. There's a lot to be said for the DO degree, too.
