Do the schools inform you by e-mail/regular mail/phone if they put you on a waitlist? Or do the applicants have to call in and find about the status of their application? Can you be put on a waitlist before being interviewed or are waitlists only for those who have already been interviewed and may be accepted?

OK, there are 2 types of wait lists.

1. Pre-interview / hold for interview. These are generally referred to as "pre-interview hold" lists (at least around here.)

2. Post-interview. This is what people generally refer to when they say "wait list".

Most schools generally send their decisions via regular mail, although there are a few that do interview invites via e-mail. You may also find out your status online if the school has a decent status check.

Hope that helps.
