question about fafsa

I started filling out my fafsa today. There ask what my gross income is and how many exemptions I have. To answer these questions, they direct me to look at my 1040 form. However, I have not filed my taxes yet so and I do not have a 1040 form. Do I have to wait till I file my taxes to complete the form? But I heard that you should fill out fafsa once January 1st arrives, I doubt anyone fills out their taxes THAT early.
