Question about learning to speak spanish

When I was living in Spain, I took a family vacation trip through italy. The Italians understood my Spanish while I understood their Italian. The languages are close enough to be understood without any previous experience with the other language. I am talking about the Spanish spoken in Spain. I would imagine they would be able to understand some of it. At worst you may have to learn Spanish but if it came to that your Italian would be a TREMENDOUS facilitator in learning Spanish.

On an interesting note, they were thinking about having a Spanish for Dentists class inserted into our curriculum, but it didn't happen, probably because students have enough on their plates as it is.

I'm a native Spanish speaker and I took a couple of courses in Italian in college. I understood well over 80 percent of the material from the very first day. The languages are very similar and I think you will not have a problem communicating with Spanish-speaking patients using words you know from Italian. I'm sure eventually you will pick up key words in Spanish... Memorize a few common words/phrases...and what you know in Italian will help you the rest of the way.

A fluent Spanish speaker and a fluent Italian speaker can communicate rather effectively, with the occasional vocabulary misunderstanding. If either party is not a native speaker, however, greater problems will arise; unless one of them is very erudite, with a good background in Latin.

I was wondering how useful is italian when dealing with spanish speaking patients?

Italian food is very, very useful when dealing with spanish speaking patients. Italian food is useful no matter the occasion....

Thanks for all of your inputs...

then if the majority say italian is good enough to communicate ,then I trust your words and focus on learning something else than spanish
