I know that FP, ob/gyn, and probably some other specialities have various oppurtunities to get their loans repayed if they go practice in certain areas. I think typically the state or county pays them off for you. Is there anything like this for GS? Are there any other options with regard to finding somebody else to pay off your loans post GS residency (excluding Uncle Sam)?

Those loan repayment things are only for primary care specialties, which are in severe shortages in certain areas: Peds, FP, IM, OB/Gyn, and Gen Practice Dentistry. It doesn't even include IM-Peds or EM; so I highly doubt there are any Federal programs to pay back loans for anything surgical besides the military.

Plus Surgeons make so much more than those other specialists that there doesn't need to be any more financial incentive to attract folks.

I have heard of some private practice groups offering to pay back loans for surgeons who work for them for a couple years. They may also offer an opportunity to buy into a partnership after that time too. A pretty sweet deal.

So does this mean the private practice pays you less of a income and uses what they don't pay you to pay back your loans? If not, how does it work?

And are these practices usually ones that are in undesired locations that need an incentive to attract surgeons?

I think typically these are actually the best practices, that are well established with very high expectations of new surgeons. Therefore, in order to attract the best and the brightest young surgeons, they sweeten the pot a little. This is actually a fairly common practice I think in all specialities, as I know of many FP practices that will do the same.

There are some for general surgery that are non-military, but these are federal programs. These include Indian Health Service and the like, which require service in an underserved area. There are also disadvantaged minority loan repayment programs.

Some States also offer GS loan repayment. I'm sure Google can help tell you (the OP) which ones.
