  1. Resident [Any Field]
Long story short.... I am in a GPR with lots of OS. I want to be a surgeon. I took CBSE back in second year and got a 63.... was devastated. Didn’t think I had it in me to be a surgeon. Now I realized I don’t want to regret never trying. I am retaking the CBSE in Feb and applying for intern year. I’ll be applying to OMS next cycle.

My questions:

What do programs look for when selecting interns?

As an intern applying to OS, how did you get LOR from the attendings when intern year starts in July and applications for match open in March? I hope my timeline isn’t screwed up here.

Lastly... what kind of a score should I get? With GPR year and no externships, I’m thinking many programs will move past my application pretty quickly.

Thanks everyone!

Do externships. Network and crush the CBSE. Aim for a 65+. Best of luck.

Why not take it in August?

1. Programs look for the same qualities they look for in residents.

2. You wait longer. Their letters mean more. Historically many interns match into their residency program

3. Same score as you needed before, no shortcuts. 70+ is what you want

Thanks. August testing is closed (unfortunately)

What's your class rank? Are you aiming for 4 or 6? Do well on CBSE and extern where you are interested. If you're going for 4, I think 70+ is fine.

PDs favor candidates who did an intern year/GPR compared to fresh out graduates if they have the same stats, and there are plenty who apply after they graduate or don't get in first round, I think you will be fine.

I’m not sure that I have a preference for 4 or 6 year. My class rank was top 1/3.
Thank you for your response.

Not being a dental student, am I still able to extern? All the information says it’s specifically for 3rd and 4th year dental students.

Do a non categorical internship. You pretty much function at the same level as a first-year resident, while receiving the same education, training and responsibilities. You get paid too. Good luck
