Does direct transmission of a disease involve Kissing?
Or can it include paracites living on soil surfaces eg : hookworm?

Not really sure..can Stds be transmitted by kissing?

It's not acting like an STD if kissing is the mode of transmission. Direct transmission I would think is when a disease is transmitted from one person to another without any intermediate phases? Either way, any disease that exists in the saliva can be transmitted through kissing. colds, mumps, mono, etc.

Is the hookworm a direct means of transmission?

if u **** on someone's foot, sure (forgive me, haven't gotten to parasitology, so i could be wrong about route of exit and route of entry).

I don't quite understand what your question is - but I wuold suggest google would be better able to provide an answer than the pre-allo forum. Which brings me to my next question - how is this relevant to pre-allo?

A disease that exhibits direct transmission means that it can be passed from one human to another, without needing a vector (e.g. a mosquito is needed for a protozoan a la malaria, or another kind of insect, a mammal, etc.) For example, avain influenza strain H5N1 has not yet been proven to exhibit direct transmission from person to person - you need to get near infected birds/droppings/eggs/etc. to get it. Same with anthrax, malaria, yellow fever, lyme disease, other arboviral diseases...blah blah blah. Lots of stuff can be transmitted directly - pneumonic plague, herpesviruses, hiv, etc. You get the idea. So, with that interpretation in mind, kissing could lead to direct transmission, depending on the organism in question. I, personally, would not want to kiss someone with active TB, or Ebola, or pneumonic plague.

I would not consider hookworm infections to be directly transmitted, unless, as someone so eloquently stated, it went directly via fecal-skin contact/oral/"I don't really wanna think about it" route. The worms/eggs have to exit the body (generally via feces? is there another route?), and then infect new hosts once they are "out".

And STD's transmitted by kissing? Well, herpesviruses (HSI and II), if remember correctly, can manifest as lesions on both genitalia and around the oral cavity - and both can be spread by kissing someone with sores. Eew. I don't know if mono is considered an "STD". I doubt it. There has been some research into HIV transmission via kissing, and I think that it has been demonstrated in rare cases (e.g. where children have shared a toothbrush and probably brushed their gums till they bled)...but I think that, for the most part, the genital area and the mouth area are pretty different environments, so anything that tends to live in one area is probably not gonna colonize the other.

Does that make any sense? Oh, yeah, and what the heck does this have to do with this forum??

Just to take it a little further, and give an example, Hep B is an STD, transmitted either through blood to blood or sexual contact. While it has been documented in saliva (as well as feces, I think), it is generally thought not to be present is sufficient amounts for contact with saliva to suggest a significant risk of transmission. More important (especially for you as a dental student) would be the possibility of blood in the saliva coming in contact with an open wound, break in skin, etc. I imagine this situation is similar to HIV in saliva, but I haven't read up on that one specifically, so can't say for sure.
Hope this helps.

i dunno about you, but just MAKE SURE your partner doesn't have anything before you do it with them.

STDs are a dangerous and very bad thing. you mentioned kissing, but kissing where? on the lips of the genitals? if there is fluid transmission, then you may be at risk for STDs.

just remember that if you get syphillis, you wont be able to have kids for at least 10 years. if you're a guy, you're going to get no sex for 10 years. if you're a girl, you can't have kids for 10 years.

if you get chylmidia, which is worse, you will be on medication for life.

so think twice before taking the condom off.

umm...where are you getting ur syphilis info from? penicillin'll just take care of that as far as I know. And chlamydia forcing u to go on meds for life?! where did that come from?! A z-pack or dose of tetracycline will make that go away.

Yeah, there is increasing drug resistance out there with regards to STD's, but the info underdog gave doesn't seem to be remotely related to the info I've seen... 😕
