Question for KCUMB students

Do any of the current KCUMB students have suggestions about where to live? I can't do an apartment because I have a large dog (which I can't give up) and a cat and my husband. We want a house and yard not too expensive or fancy but in a good neighborhood. My hubby will probably work in Independence so we are wanting to be closer to there. Originally, I was just going to try and rent a house there but I've had a lot of people say the commute would suck.

Anyway, I just thought I'd throw it out there and see. Any advice would be much appreciated!

Or for anyone who lives in or is familiar with KC? What's the best neighborhood given price, safety, privacy, commute?

My husband and I bought a house in Independence. My commute to school was about 13 minutes (leaving house at 7am) unless there was an accident. Coming home, it depends on what time you're coming home. Between 4:30 and 5:30 is the worst and it would take 30 minutes at most.

Independence has some bad areas and some good areas, since it connects with KC. I live on the South side right by I-70, the mall, and some very nice houses. My house however is thirty years old and was very affordable and I'm very happy with it.

I have really enjoyed living here, cost of living is good, highway access is a must for third and fourth year in KC, and I'm very close to millions of kinds of stores and restaurants.
