This is for the 240+ Step 1 crowd. Even if you are just leaning at this point.

List your top 3 choices for specialties in order. Let's see what specialities the top test takers are interested in applying.

For the 2005, 2006, and 2007 crowd post your specialty of choice right now.

Top three. I'm really leaning toward number one.

1. Pathology
2. Radiology
3. Anesthesiology

Honestly, I counld not bear to do anything else in medicine..... took the test in 04

1. Ortho
2. Rads
3. Plastics

I really only consider the first two legitimate possibilities.

Maybe leaning towards path of some sort?

everyone is heading to where the money is.

Sure. I guess it depends if you consider medicine a "sacred calling" or a job. If you consider it a job, as most current medical students do, you will go to where you can make the most $$$ and work the least.

Talk to me about "Sacred calling" when the 200k+ initial investment is paid off ;)

Medicine surely wasn't a sacred calling for me. I just liked science and wanted to make a decent living. Thank god I actually found something I liked or I'd be up a creek.

I hear surgery is a pretty laid back totally non intense profession.

How do you figure frank? You sound like you're burnt out lately from some of your posts. Did third year take the pep out of your step? I can't believe you'd say that most med students consider their career just a job and not a part of their calling.

1) Emergency Medicine
2) Diagnostic Radiology
3) Anesthesiology

Definitely a surgical subspecialty for me :) To be a good primary care doc is really an art but it just isn't my thing. I learned a ton on the rotation but I can't adjust BP and DM meds all day.

1) GI transplant surg (liver, kidney, small bowel)-- from an academic point of view this seems the most interesting
2) cardiothoracic surg (if rads and cards stop stealing procedures)
3) plastics--who knows...I may sell out and actually want a life

Orthopedic Surgery
Plastic Surgery
Radiation Oncology

1) Trauma Surgery
2) EM
3) Ortho
3) Plastics
Everyone is telling me to do DERM, whats the big deal?

Hey, is gas a fellowship through IM?

no, anesthesia is a residency right out of medical school. I think it's 3 years.

Meaning gas = gastroenterology

:D My mistake...

and dc park-- you're right, what I meant was 3 years after a prelim year which I think you can do in either medicine or surgery if I'm not mistaken

I really am unsure right now, i dont want a score to guide me into a field... but here is what i think i am interested in now

1) GI (obv after three years of IM)
2) Peds subspeciality (maybe heme-onc, endocrine)
3) Urology

1. invasive cards
2. ID
3. endocrinology

1. EM
2. EM
3. EM

Of course, this was my list before I took the MCAT, let alone Step 1.

By the way, I just don't get people who, because of a good score, decide to pursue a certain field, or that because of a less-than-stellar score they have to write-off their aspirations. Seems like there are a few other criteria to consider, such as what the job is like. . .

1) Surgery- Critical Care or Trauma
2) EM
.
.
3) Medicine- hospitalist

I'm currently in the middle of a 4 week outpatient medicine rotation in the ER and love it. EM moved from a distant second to a closer second.

1. Emergency Med
2. OB/Gyn (let the wisecracks begin...)
3. Anesthesiology

I want to work with patients but don't particularly want or need to have long term relationships like primary care docs. I like procedures to some extent, but not as much as the surgeons. Want to make decent money--more than psych or peds, but it doesn't have to be through the roof. I also don't want to feel like I HAVE to do a fellowship to practice what I want. For example, I think GI could be cool, but I'd hate to get stuck practicing general medicine if I didn't get a GI fellowship. That said, I think it would be cool to sub-specialize in like toxicology, fertility med, or pain med.

Be a man and list your top 3 for your so called "fans".

Wow, my critics/jealous whine-o's pull posts from 2004. I've actually posted into what specialty I'm currently applying a few weeks ago; radiology is an awesome specialty, but it wasn't for me. I'll let the tools on here figure that one out!!!

Pox, where is that score??? ;) (or are you still taking the "higher road")

Yeah I thought BF was going into ENT and then facial plastics or something like that.

Nice covert slight. Let's see if there is a proportional response.

My Step 1 transcript says "PASS."

1. Pathology (95% certain of this one)
2. Radiology (Interventional)
3. Anesthesia
