Given that a lot of the final degree marks (GPA) in european systems are based only on the clinical years, and that our scoring system is different from the US 4.0 GPA system, how closely do residency programs in general look at preclinical year marks when deciding to extend an offer or reject an application?

Likewise, to what extent do the UK/Eu boards look at preclinical year marks?

Thanks!

Hey Leorl,
I was at a US residency info meeting in RCSI organised by Final Meds there a few weeks ago. The impression I got is that *great* Step scores and strong LORs from US doctors in the field you want to go into are probably the most important aspects of your application. No one mentioned anything about grades, pre-clinical or otherwise...Step scores seem to be the big thing!!

FYI, here's a list of the destinations of some of the RCSI Class of 2004:

Anaesthesiology (UCSF - within match)
Emergency Medicine (Albert Einstein NY - outside match)
Emergency Medicine (Orlando Regional - within match)
Family Medicine (Duke - within match)
Family Medicine (Abington Memorial, Philadelphia - outside match)
General Surgery (Mayo Clinic - within match)
Internal Medicine (Georgetown - within match)
Internal Medicine (U of New Mexico - within match)
Obstetrics and Gynaecology (Mayo Clinic - within match)
Paediatrics (Children's National Medical Center, George Washington University - within match)
Pathology (U Virginia - outside match)
