Are there any categorical Mayo Rochester residents (radiology, anesthesia, optho, derm, neuro, rad-onc, PM&R) currently doing, or recently completed, their Mayo prelim medicine year? If so, would you mind sharing your impressions? Feel free to PM me if you prefer.

Thank you.

PS - I also posted this same request on the anesthesia forum. Sorry for the duplicate thread.

First and last bump - any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hello! I am an intern at Mayo. in your prelim year, you will have 2 months of electives, 3 months of medicine inpatient, 1 month of cards, 2 weeks of CCU, 2 weeks of heart failure, 1 month of ED, 1 month of Oncology, 1 month of Neuro, 1 month of MICU, 1 month of a rotation that varies depending on your specialty (for instance, anesthesia people do neonatal ICU, ophto people do Neph ICU, etc), and 3 weeks of vacation.
Intern year is very nice and we are far from being overworked. I have been averaging between 65 and 70 h a week, and only hit 79h once in 7 months.
Also, Mayo will pay for your trip to present a poster anywhere in the country at any time. Research is all over the place.
It is a very friendly environment, and there is just no place like the Mayo Clinic to practice medicine (believe me, I looked around!!).
Our program director is very dedicated to making the program better and better each year, and is very responsive to resident's suggestions and criticism.

I think you will love it here! Good luck on the match!!!

In the past month I have had the pleasure of getting the scoop on Mayo Clinic--Rochester's prelim year from 2 people that are currently there from my med school (one a neuro prelim, and another a derm prelim who was actually post-call at the time)...they ABSOLUTELY love how they are being trained, the environment of faculty, fellow residents, and the sincere belief that interns are there to learn and care for patients. Of course, it is STILL an internship and a steep learning curve to climb (they in no way insinuated that their year had been "easy") but because they have a more positive outlook, everyone around them works hard, and they receive support from the department, they feel they are getting more out of it than a lot of colleagues around the country they've talked to.
After speaking with them, I myself am looking forward to my internship there!
Best of luck!

Thank you Hgb and Brainstorm! I appreciate both of your perspectives and I am excited about the possibility of doing my prelim there. Hgb, my understanding is that suits/professional clothes are mandatory on non-call days - is this statement correct? It's not a huge deal; it will just mean that I need to budget money for clothes.

Thanks Again!

Yes, suits are mandatory whenever you are not on call. Physicians at Mayo do not wear lab coats. It is an old tradition. I actually love it, and I feel like the patients appreciate it as well (afterall, you are dressing up for them!).
Brainstorm is correct, intern year is not easy here or anywhere else. But I am sure that here at Mayo the intern year is as pleasant as it can be. No doubts about it.
PLUS, for the ones of you who are afraid of the Minnesota winters, I would like to let you know that we are having the warmest January since 1946 and temperature is approximately 16 degrees higher than average for any given day. 😀 hehehe.
If you have any other questions about Mayo or Rochester, I will be happy to answer it. 🙂
