question regarding summer vacation

I was looking at Temple's academic calendar and they had Summer I and II classes.
Are the summer semesters mandatory or are they something extra?

Which calendar exactly are you looking at? Do you have a link? TUSPM generally gives 2 months off for first Summer.

That's essentially the undergraduate calendar. The podiatry calendar is a bit different and gives about 2 months off over the first Summer, but there are no Summers off after that.
