Hi to any AZCOM med students or prospective students.

I wanted to know your impressions about AZCOM, the curiculum, and I hear it has a really good reputation for scoring on the COMPLEX exam, about the campus....anything you find valuable.

Also I was first found out about D.O. schools in high school thru a field trip from a summer camp and then I met a DO student over last summer when I was doing a volunteer internship in India thru Unite for Sight, which was an excellent exprience and helped me understand why I want to be a doctor.

I am graduating with about a 3.5 in Molecular Biology with honors from Univ of Wisconsin-Madison this May and ill have next year off. My set back is my O Chem I grade which was a C but improved to a B for IInd semester....so thats kind of iffy to MD schools I hear. Also I am taking the MCAT in April...what average scores do DO schools accept students with?

Thanks

🙂

I'm an MS-1 at AZCOM and so far it's been a great experience. The curriculum is incredibly intense (we have an exam every week and even two sometimes), but it really prepares students well for the step 1 boards (COMLEX and USMLE). During the first two years there are three ten week quarters per academic year with around three months off during the summer between first and second year. From what I hear that's more vacation time than what a lot of schools offer. The clinical years are very flexible and every year there are new rotation sites opening up. If you choose to set up rotations on your own, you could do just about all of them out of state (especially during fourth year). But being an MS-1 I'm not the best person to ask about the clinical years.

As far as admissions goes, don't worry about that C in Ochem. I had a C in calculus and C's in my freshman bio classes at U of Colorado. The fact that I improved my GPA to 3.5 when I graduated was what really mattered. Plus, if you do well on the MCAT you'll have nothing to worry about. My class had an average MCAT of 27 (my score thanks to a 7 in verbal), so if you score within a couple of points of that number, you should be fine.

Good luck with everything and really try your best to enjoy that year off. Oh and by the way, I just got involved with Unite for Sight here at AZCOM, so having prior experience with the organization would be a plus.

I'm an MS4 at AZCOM - the first 2 years are really well run. The faculty and administration is very pro-student and extremely interested in helping each student be successful. There is a lot of flexibility and they provide an excellent curriculum in terms of preparing for the COMLEX(comPlex) is what you call it after you compare it to the very well written USMLE exam!

It is very easy to live in Glendale and relatively cheap. It is also very family oriented - many students have spouses and children.

There are many students who complain about the clinical years, however. It can be difficult to navigate your way through years 3 and 4. I have been mostly happy with my clinical years, but the clinical department is significantly weaker than the basic sciences, in my opinion. I do know there were many drastic changes made at the beginning of this school year and maybe some 3rd year AZCOM ers might be able to comment on those changes.

MCAT scores for my class went down to the low 20's and i know there were people with grades worse than 1 C in Ochem. Osteopathic schools really look at more than just hard numbers - so don't stress out about it!
