How crucial is it to go to a research heavy residency if I want to continue research I'm already doing? Will going to a place with little research focus make it very difficult to do research (even if I do it on my own time), or does the time these research residencies give make a substantial difference?

My personal opinion is that the stars need to align for any MD/PhD to have a significant research career these days. So yes, I believe that you need to go to a residency that will provide you with the time, resources, and mentoring required to be a physician-scientist, wherever that might be. I think all the specialties have a physician-scientist track (official or unofficial) available, though the specifics of what is the best pathway and what are the best programs for that pathway (not necessarily the big name places) will vary depending on the residency choice.
