What types of questions are good ones to ask at your GS interviews?

A lot of the info the schools provide is roughly the same across the board, with tiny variations here and there.

I have heard that having good questions regarding their program helps them remember you.

I just want to be competently prepared and trained as a General Surgeon, sigh.

Good questions, IMO:

What are the two biggest weaknesses of this program? All programs have weaknesses and most will be able to point out their biggest weakness. Push them a little more and get the top two to assure you're getting the whole picture.

What are the greatest strengths? As above, most places have things that they are very strong in.

What fellowship would I have a difficult time obtaining from this program?

If I do a fellowship, are staff supportive of this choice (even if it's plastics) and willing to help along the way?

Are there any forseeable changes in the next 5 years?

What you need to find is a place that fits what you want. Are you willing to give up a little autonomy to operate more? Or vice versa. Or neither. Do you want a lot of laparoscopy? Is pediatrics your thing or thoracic cases? Match your interests to the program.

On the other hand, don't be too restrictive. What you like as a student will often change dramatically as a resident.
