I am curruntly finishing High School in canada, and i had a quick question

Canadian med schools dont look at which university you are from, only the GPA and other stuff. but do american med schools do the same?

thanks in advanced.

The consensus seems to be that GPA >>>>> Undergraduate institution. I don't know about Canada though.

I think Canadian med schools do look at which university you are from, because it is much more likely for Canadian adcoms to be familiar with all the Canadian undergrad schools, or at least the ones in their province.

Undergrad institution does count, but not as much as GPA and MCAT.

My academic advisor has said:

If you were at a top-tier undergraduate institution, some medical schools might give you .1 GPA boost (on their paperwork) for compensation, but most will use MCAT scores to compare you to the rest of the applicant pool. GPA, MCAT certainly most important.

That's likely correct, despite it having been said by a pre-med advisor.

A former UCLA admissions officer said that UCLA and many other med schools have ranking of undergraduate schools and adjust gpa's by up to .3. I think that is more reliable than an premed adviser.

Wow, .3

That's almost unfair prestige whoring. I'm sure MCAT scores really make a difference here though.

Do you guys really think they have a liist of all the Canadian universities..? lol.. i doupt that is going to happen.. the university im planning to do my undergrad doesnt even have med school.. but its still an OK school.. should i go to this one? or the other's with a med school.. obviously they are harder and stuff..

I was briefed about the scoring process at one school. Undergrad institution was one of the categories. They were ranked from tier 5 (best) to tier 1. I'm not sure how many points that counted for, but certainly not as many as GPA/mcat.

It makes sense to me. Most pre med courses are graded on a curve. I'm willing the people in physics I at UCLA were better as a whole at physics than the people in physics I at my undergrad institution.
