Can casual racial humor on Facebook be a red flag? I’m specifically referring to when a person of color lightheartedly makes jokes about their own racial stereotypes. For example, an Asian American making a joke about how their parents are cheap and explicitly relating that to their race.

Just turn up your privacy settings to max, change your display name and search email/phone number, and deactivate your account during the app cycle if you are concerned about your social media presence

I kind of feel like that isn’t the answer just because I don’t want to hide my personality when I’m not in the workplace. Of course, these jokes are inappropriate in the workplace. But if that’s my style of humor outside the workplace I don’t think there is anything wrong with that. As long as I recognize that I have to conduct myself professionally during school and work, I feel like that’s all that should matter.

If that is your opinion why ask for others, given that yours seem set in stone?

Why not just joke about your parents without stereotyping an entire race? That said, one of my favorite memes:

I would argue that stereotyping a race is very different than using pre-established stereotypes as a source of humor.

Regardless of your personal opinion, it is obviously the smart choice to put your settings on private no matter what. I can guarantee no adcom (or whoever would look) has ever been overly impressed because someone was PC on Facebook or enjoyed the dank memes they posted. It can only hurt you not having it on private.

If you have to ask about it, don't do it. Think about whether it's something you feel really strongly about and have to say. If so, then max out your privacy and say it. But if it's something you could do without saying, then just save yourself the trouble and don't say it.

Yeah I don’t have Facebook. I have an Instagram where I post pics of my kids and furniture I make, but that’s it.

Very true. Especially in this day and age, social media is probably the worst invention of all time. Putting your life on blast and having it saved for all eternity for anyone to go back to is stupid and to an extent terrifying. I would even go so far as to say that if your job doesn't require you to be on social media maybe don't even use it. The smaller your internet footprint the better. Or at least don't post every thought that crosses your mind on it.

It is great for some things. I used it a lot on deployments and when I was away to see pics of my kids and talk to my wife. Ever since I’ve been home though, it’s just a distraction and a place to get into arguments, so I just deleted it.

Just make your stuff private. Your prospective employers and admin ideally shouldn't even be reading your statuses to begin with, since they would be hidden and locked. I imagine nowadays no one has a public profile, at least anyone with a professional career.

@OP best not to try things that are testing out the waters when you're in your app cycle. Depending on how vulgar the jokes are you can pass it off as fine as a minority but don't go out of your way to make these jokes.

Also as a general rule of thumb your social media accounts should already be set to friends only. In this day and age you really don't know who is watching you and has access to your whole life.

Yes but to the SJWs it doesn’t matter. These people will go out of the way to get you fired because they are petty and evil, and will use the “microaggressions” or “words=violence” rhetoric to undo your years of hard work. Go private on social media or delete it altogether.

I think the difference is OP indicated the scenario where a POC attempts these jokes.

SJWs typically get pissed when a nonliberal and/or white attempts these sorts of things.

Sure, people shouldn't do a lot of things. We routinely look up the interview candidates once we get a list of names for residency. People are interested in seeing what kind of person you actually are compared to the persona you put up for a few hours during the actual interview day. This is why it's common practice to change your facebook profile name to something else during interview season. Don't know if you can do the same for intstagram, twitter etc.

You can, you can change your info on twitter or instagram name

And I agree, which is why it's smart for people to keep their stuff private so only the people YOU choose sees everything, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook you name it. For example, if someone was to look up me, they would learn nothing since everything is hidden.

Sometimes it's best not to throw-up your immaturity to the whole world via social media. Sure you can lock your account, but people can find anything if they're looking for it. I have social media to read and watch all the idiots on the internet. If I want someone to know what's going on in my life, I'll.....idk, maybe pick up the phone and give them a ring.

Admissions deans can and do look at Facebook.

Make smart choices.

One of my good friends from high school is Mexican-American. He used white-out to write "Bean Burrito Pride!" on his backpack and was subsequently called to the office to be disciplined for racism. It all got sorted out when the principal realized the stupidity of punishing a Hispanic teenager for being racist against himself. But as I've said so many times on SDN, reduce your risk. If a school thinks you might be a risky prospect, you can kiss your app goodbye. I recommend you delete posts that could be construed as sexist, racist, or anything else, even if they're self-deprecating.

I actually think you should go out of your way to make these jokes so adcoms know you have a sense of humor. After all, laughter is the best medicine...
