Is any one on the student doctor forums aware of research opportunities for summer research in Europe. I am currently an MS-1 looking to learn more about the field of radiation oncology. I have come across several programs in the united states that offer summer research and clinical experiences in the field of radiation oncology, but I had hoped to find something overseas, particularly in Europe to mix travel along with research. If anybody is aware of some information about Radiation Oncology Research in Europe or any where else outside the united states, for that matter even programs in the United States if nothing exciting is available overseas I hope you may share them with me and other SDNers. Thank you, and I am very much obparticular good programs to apply to, I would be very much obliged.
Thank You,

There are few avenues to get funds from the actual labs themselves, since in Europe, academic centers are govt. funded, and there are HUGE bureaucratic steps to get anything done. However, there are a few avenues like the Austrian American Foundation (http://www.aaf-online.org/maxkade.html ) that fund med student programs, or have interest free loans (see the Netherlands American Foundation, http://www.thenaf.org/index.cfm?s=education ).

For a nice excuse to tour and get some educational activity in, you may also try the European Summer School in Oncology (see http://www.isoms.nl/ and http://www.meduniwien.ac.at/vsso/ ), which is held in Groningen, Netherlands or Vienna on alternating years. The program is run by radiation oncology Depts. under ESTRO funding, and Richard Potter (ASTRO plenary session this year) is the head guy. A friend from Austria spoke highly of this program, but, sadly, you'd have to pay your own ticket.

Best of luck

hey wow, I am definetly so happy that you both have responded to this thread. I have just returned home for winter break, and am going to be looking actively for summer programs. These programs available in europe sound fantastic, and I would definetly never have heard about them without the help of this website. Thank you very much.

doing research abroad is an experience and all (traveling, living abroad, etc), but i would think that doing research at an institution with a residency program would be more beneficial (making contacts, getting recs from docs that people may know). its a toss up though...i love traveling!
