I know this is probably a dumb question but where are the national stats on the popularity of different residency specialties?

Just look at the match statistics. The NRMP reports the number of students who applied for each specialty.

I can tell you FM is close to the bottom. Somewhere between proctology and ear fungal specialist. 😀

Actually proctology (gastroenterology or urology) and ear fungal specialists (ENT or Dermatology) are all extremely competitive fields.

Hmm...seems to be that while I could make a case for Gastro being "proctology" I cannot for urology. I would choose Colo-rectal Surgery in its stead.
