I am pretty confident about my first 3-4 programs on ROL, but then it all gets blurry.

Anybody has an opinion on Buffalo program vs Stony Brook? I like them about the same.

SB went unfilled for some reason for the last 2 years. Residents in the program suggest that it is because of the location (1hr from NYC). I personally would rather live in the burbs than in the city. Their grads seem to do pretty well with finding jobs afterwards.

Any input is appreciated.

I don't know anything about buffallo. I liked stony brook and it is well respected. I think the reason it hasn't matched is indeed location. SB gets alot of people who really want to be in the city. And then alot of burb type people think its NYC and don't apply there. B/C it is a really good program. If you *like* the burbs, its a great program. And you get access to the good city things when you want them. (and its 2 hours away, really)

I don't know much about SB, but i have a friend who goes to UB. He doesn't like it. He says the weather and the isolated location can be really depressing... but its condusive to lots of studying. I don't like being in a big city either... for me, the ideal would be the burbs, but within driving distance of a major city.

Buffalo is best described as a medium-sized city at the edge of the Midwest. It's probably best known for the cold weather, although it's really not that much worse than a lot of places (I would know - I went to high school there). If you want to get away, Toronto is only 1.5 hours away

The UB program is an up-and-coming one, with a strong ultrasound component (headed by Dr. Jehle, who co-authored a major text on EM U/S). You work at two main hospitals (Buffalo General and ECMC; the latter contains the trauma experience), as well as Childrens' which has a pretty busy peds ED. When I interviewed there, all the residents seemed quite content with their training, and Dr. Krause, the PD is solidly behind them.

Bottom line: I think it's one of the "hidden gems" out there.

lol search for Stoney Brook and you will find a post saying why it's a "hidden gam" too. I interviewed there and agree. It's a great program with alot to offer. I know nothing about Buffalo other then I didn't want to live there so I didn't apply.
