I don't know that class rank really matters in the abstract, since that isn't going to be the top of any residency director's criteria. For example someone not at the top of their class rank but with a great Step 1, research, and connections is probably better off than merely being the top ranked student.

Seriously, I never knew where I ranked in the class. Supposedly, there were some code words that the Dean's letter had in it to give residencies what quartile you were in, but beyond that, it was a general guess.
