why do med students love rankings so much?

Everyone loves rankings, not just med students. As a result, magazines love to put out issues with rankings because these always sell the most copies.

e.g. USNews - Best Hospitals, Best Colleges, Best Undergrads, Best Careers. Money Magazine - Best Places to Live. Businessweek - Best B-Schools. Asiaweek - Best managers in Asia. SI - College Football, Basketball Preview issues..........

Only people who are near the top love rankings.

Everyone else spends their time figuring out ways to discredit the rankings.

What are the top five reasons medical students like rankings?

5. They've all got OCD.
4. Gives them something to do when not comparing their grades to their classmates.
3. How else do you figure out which program has the most egotistical people?
2. So they can tell people they got interviewed at a top 10 program.

And finally...

Number 1: Rankings? We don't need no stinking rankings!

I would have to say, though, that your question ranks in the top 10 most thought-provoking questions ever posted here.
