hey guys,

I had RCT in April on #9 and I just got back from my half year checkup with my endodontist. I had some questions that I didn't really feel like asking him, but I was wondering if my hopefully future colleagues and peers could help me out.

He took and x-ray of the tooth, touched it and its neighbors with endo ice (i wasn't sure if i could feel anything on number 10), and told me that the infection had spread to number 10 and that I needed another root canal soon. Maybe it was the way he told me I needed RCT or that my tooth doesn't feel the pain like #9, but I'm a bit skeptical now. Without looking at my information could you guys broaden my view on a couple things.

1) If #10 really is infected and dying, would it be the wrong move to wait until I feel pain like I had for #9? (RCT is expensive and even though I have insurance, I would prefer to save the money until the moment I need to part w/ it)

2) Maybe it's just the way he told me I needed a root canal, but is it possible that their isn't a significant problem and he's just looking for another customer?

3) Is their an alternative, that isn't a second opinion, to check if my tooth is in trouble?

in my limited expertise (pretty much none), no pain does not necessarily mean that the tooth is good. It could mean that you have necrotic pulp, or dead pulp. No nerve = no sensation of pain. I would trust your dentist. You should actually feel a sharp pain that goes away when the stimulus is removed. Lingering pain = bad, no pain = really bad.

oh and ibtl

Sorry but you're not supposed to seek medical advice here on SDN. If you are doubting your endodontistls opinion, feel free to seek a second opinion at another dental office. Closing thread.
