I know that I'm probably going to get flamed big time for this, but this is an honest question. Is it a bad idea to retake Orgo I my first semester Junior year if I'm -positive- that I can get an A in it? A B- and an A would average to a 3.35 instead of the 2.7 that it is now. GPA wise, it would not even change +/- 0.01 points. However, it would "prove" that I know my stuff.

Would this be unnecessary if I pull an A in Orgo II and take like an advanced Orgo class and get an A in that also? I know that it's presumptuous to assume that I'll get an A in Orgo II and an advanced Orgo class, but I know precisely why I did so poorly in this class (not so much related to the material, the prof curved to a C- and I just didn't take it seriously) and have fixed that.

I always thought retaking a class should only be done if the grade is severely below your capacity and something really went wrong in that class. If you got a C, then I would retake. Also, med schools will probably also factor in that you are learning the material twice and will at least partially account for the A. Simply taking orgo II and getting an A should suffice to make the point.

Talk to your advisor. Personally, I'd retake it.

no dont!!!! go on with orgo II.... seriously.. take orgo II this semester and get done with orgo... and if you really want to retake orgo I, then do it senior year... but my recommendation is to always try to have the pre-req's done before senior year (bio, chem, orgo, and physics).. and then retake any pre-req's if you wish to do so in senior year or summer before senior year starts if you want to apply to med school in your senior year of undergrad

Thanks for the advice. I figured this was just me being neurotic...I guess stop looking backward and focus on what the future.

I would talk to your advisor before making a decision.

If you don't retake it, then decide you wish you had after you've already taken II, you might not be able to do so.

Food for thought: my advisor's daughter got a B and retook it.

So I found out from my advising office:

They recommend repeating a C+ or lower.

I can re-take Orgo I AFTER I've already taken Orgo II, so I think I will continue and then if I decide I really need it later on to retake Orgo I just to prove I know it. But probably won't, simply because it wouldn't have an appreciable affect on my GPA.

Huh, at my university you can only do a grade replacement (retake) if you got a D or F. They don't even let you do replacements for Cs... but whatever you want. I think it would be a giant waste of time. Just do better in your other classes and on the MCAT.

I dont want to comment on your post since I havent taken orgo yet but from the people I know that took it, they told me "a B in orgo is like A for everyone". But if you really want to prove something, separate yourself from the pack which I think most med schools are looking for, do it!

Best of luck.

I think it may separate yourself from the pack in a bad way. Med school want human beings, not people so neurotic that they retake every B- they get. (well, most of us are that neurotic, the key is too not show it). Besides, I think the time you would spend retaking would be better spent on MCAT studying, which will help get you into medical school much more than retaking a B- will.

How are your other science grades? If they're good (meaning more As than Bs) then don't bother retaking even if you're 100% sure you can get an A+ in it. Use all that energy in getting an A in OChem II instead.

Just move on, and redeem yourself with better grades in higher level chem classes. I got a B- in orgo 2 and redeemed myself in biochem, and on the mcat bio section. Been on 2 interviews so far and nobody even asked about it, so don't bother.
