I have 5 C's during my undergrad. at my state school in CA. I now live in TX. My plan is to repeat those classes and hopefully make A's. Can these repeat be taken at a CC or at any other college than the orginal institution that these classes were taken? It would suck for me to fly back to CA and spend thousands on tution when I can just retake it locally at a CC. Any thoughts or experiences? By the way, these classes are non-science and are not pre-reqs. classes; just GE.

Considering these are non-science classes and that you've already graduated (right?), I don't think there's anything wrong with this plan. Take them locally and try to get As.

Just make sure that the credit hours are equal or greater for the retakes.

Yes, I got my B.S. in 03.

Yes they are equivalent as far as credit goes however the course number and description is not verbatim. for example, at my state school it's called GEOG 100 (World Regional Geography) and at the CC here it is called GEOG 1303 (Local and World Geography).

Here the other issue. I took Business Calculus and made a C. Will a regular Calculus course replace equally?

Yes, you can take them at another institution. However, I would recommend not taking such courses at a community college (a state university would suffice).

Retaking classes at a CC will not hurt your chances at medical schools.

This is bull****.

I re-took all my stuff at CC and did just fine. All they said in there interview was "good job!"

A 21 year old pre-med at a 4 yr university had told me that it's a med. school requirement to take upper division Bio at a 4 yr. institution. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that it's encouraged not required. Octa, thanks for the story. good stuff.

Yea its an urban myth amongst hardcore pre-mies. LOL

Can't you only take upper-division classes at a 4-year college/university anyway? Aren't community colleges only freshmen and sophomore-level classes? I could be wrong, but this was my impression...

You can take lower division at a 4-year. Thats what all the freshman and sophomores that go there take in their 1st 2 years.

Also, take pre-med info with a healthy grain of salt...I guess if came down to 2 otherwises equal apps and one did his pre-reqs at a cc and one at a 4 year, the latter may have an advantage, but this is not required.

This calculator is good stuff but I don't like the gpa it produced when I input my grades. haha. After repeating like 8 classes in which I made C's in, my overall is at a 3.344 and science at 3.944; last 40 hrs 4.0. I think D.O. school emphasize the overall more right?

I think they emphasize the science more than the overall GPA. But your good with both.

Thanks, I know; I just graduated from a 4-year. 😛 That's not what I was talking about, however. I meant that community colleges don't really have upper-division courses since they're meant to be 2-year colleges.

Gotcha. My bad, the way I read it was "can only take upper level at a 4 year" as in you can't take lower but I see what you were saying....

So my problem I guess falls into this category.

I am in an 7-year program and just finished my sophomore year of the program, which didn't go quite smoothly. My gpa went down from a 3.7 to a 3.3. Not too hot grades in Genetics or Phy II but Orgo was the main killer. I S/U ed Orgo I and got an U which pretty much means that I have to retake the course. As a result I couldn't taking Orgo II.

I was wondering if I should take both Orgo I and II at the CC this summer because for the program I'm in I will have to apply to the affiliated DO school by the end of the first semester. My other option is that I take Orgo I and II next year both, but obviously i need both on my transcript.

Haha, and also as a program requirement I am supposed to take the MCATs in August this summer. I have bought the Exam Krackers books and have just started. I plan to pore over them starting tomorrow. I just want to know if I'm rushing things and I kinda feel like I've screwed up majorly.

Seems like if your in a combined type BS/DO program that you are probably almost assured a spot. I would re-take anything that you feel you could defintely improve on if the program allows it...

Since your not testing until August and you have just taken the pre-reqs I would think you are sitting pretty. Don't just read the EK books though, I would recommend that you do their entire home studey program....it's made for 10 weeks but you can tailor it to your needs. Kind of expensive to buy all the stuff though...like 500-600 bucks.

Actually you will be surprised some cc do have it now. Like the one I'm currently at, I took anatomy 1 and taking part 2 now during the summer. Histology in spring and microbiology in summer 2. I guess your limited though since it is a 2 year college.

I didn't say that it doesn't work out for some people, and if you went to a CC that was looked upon favorably by a medical school in the area, then that's okay. But the perception is that CC's are easier than 4-year universities. Whether or not it's true is another matter, but why take a chance? If you have decent grades, state schools are not hard to get into. Sure, you'll probably pay more money for the classes, but it is only an incremental difference compared to the type of money you'll be spending during medical school. What I'm saying isn't gospel, but don't call it bull**** either.

I took Microbiology, Nutrition, A&P I and II. Are those considered upper level BIO?

I think that you take a chance whether you take classes at a 4 yr or at a CC. I'm sure they look at more than just where you take your classes. I know that HCE is not required by most med school. However, if the gpa is the same for Dude 1 who took his classes at a CC and for Dude 2 who takes classes at a 4 yr but Dude 1 got some HCE; I'm guessing Dude 1 may have a better shot. And true vice versa.

Thank you!

I have already bought the Exam Kracker books. I am going through Physics right this moment (actually I'm taking a break). I plan to read through all of them, but I also saw that there is a Kaplan instructor-led classroom MCAT course from the beginning of June to the end of July, so I'm kinda of thinking that might be a good idea in addition to the EK books.
