My letters will be ~2 years old if I re-apply. Is it alright to re-use letters or do the admissions committees prefer new letters every time?

Thanks

My oppinion (although I don't know) would be to keep one of your old ones, if it is really really good, and suppliment it with new ones, to show why you are the new and improved candidate. I am sure there are schools that have specific requirements for re-applicants, so also check before re-applying.

If you're reapplying to some of the same schools you applied to in the previous cycle, some of them will still have your LORs on file anyway.

Also, I think it would be a good idea to have someone review your LORS if possible. They may not reflect how strong of a candidate you really are.

From past experience, that was my case. I had one really good letter from my gen chem professor who I had worked closely with, but a so-so letter from my O-chem professor. I truly believe that the addition of another LOR to my application this year from a doctor I have worked with closely for almost a year and a half now, who could see first-hand what my real strengths are, helped get me so many interviews.

Well, that and I'm about to finish a master's program.

you need to have a letter from someone you've worked under/with during the past 2 years. obviously for LORs from science/non-science profs, those can be resent if you haven't had any more recent courses.

Just ask the people who wrote you letters if they would mind updating them since you are re-applying. I just had my references modify my letters for med school into letters for a scholarship- it takes them no time at all because all they have to do is go back and maybe add some remarks about what you have been up to since they last wrote the letter. I give them an updated 'packet', resume, or letter explaining my situation and let them go with it.

how do u store LORs for later use? i thought u couldnt handle them becuase they had to be confiendtial from u
