I don't mean to start a war here but just listen to this: Last night I attended a pre-med meeting at my school because they had an osteopathic physician as a guest speaker. He happens to be a maternal-fetal specialist (very impressive). Anyway, he is also involved in resident selection at his institution. He made a comment that when choosing potential candidates they have a certain pecking order; 1)US MD's 2)US DO's 3)FMG's ..... So, I raised my hand and said, "If you are a DO, why would you not evaluate MD's and DO's equally and fairly?" He really had no logical reply but did say that if you are a DO and are interested in a certain residency program than rotate through there, and your chances will greatly improve. Don't get me wrong, he stated that they have had many DO's over the years but I am still taken back by his own bias (or willingness to conform) , especially because he is an osteopathic physician. Maybe I am young and idealistic and have much to learn.

If the osteopathic physician is choosing for the allopathic match than it's not his fault that US MDs get placed ahead of US DOs. It's the AOA's fault for failing to provide enough residencies for DO graduates (right now they're only able to provide 30% of DO graduates every year). I think we're lucky enough to be able to enter the allopathic match when our own (DO) residency programs are closed for MD graduates.

Unfortunately, many people go to DO schools with no intentions of giving the philosophy a chance. They want to get a medical degree and then they move on and try to forget the letters behind their name. I have worked with both. Stay the way you are...disgusted by his conformity and bias. It is nice to see that there are other people who want to be DO's for the right reasons.
