Hi everyone, I'm seeking some help with my school list. I tried applying as a junior last year in the middle of the cycle which I fear may have hurt my chances. I got two interviews, one from UMass and one from NYMC (although the invite got servered in my email, so I never actually got to interview - their dean of admissions told me to email him once my application is complete this year so I am anticipating an II again this cycle). I am an Asian male, MA resident.
Experience (from last cycle):
2 years clinical research in colorectal surgery
1 year basic science research
3 years volunteer EMS on campus, with 1.5 years as a crew chief and 1 year as Director of Medical Operations (125+ hours of direct patient contact, thousands of hours of being on call)
Additional 1/2 year of EMS work on a BLS ambulance outside of campus
~300 hours of shadowing between surgery, emergency medicine, and radiology
~30 hours volunteering at the last 3 Boston Marathons
~100 hours of volunteering at a local hospital (though that was at the very very beginning of college)
Tutored a high school student in algebra for a semester
BLS CPR instructor since Nov 2014
New Experience:
Publication and Poster Presentation from the research above in colorectal surgery
1/2 year of part-time overnight scribing in an local ED/Level II trauma center (about 300 hours so far)
2 new recommendations from an ED physician and my Medical Director on campus
My current plans are to continue scribing, though there is a very high chance (almost guaranteed) that I will be quitting that within the next two months to begin working in a Cadaver Lab with orthopedic research on the side. A formal job offer hasn't yet been made though is highly anticipated based on recent phone conversations.
My school list from last year was:
UMass
Tufts
BU
Harvard (just felt like it, won't be reapplying here)
Tulane
Hofstra
NYMC
Weill-Cornell
UVM
Quinnipiac
WMed
Western Michigan (got a phone interview, but no campus interview)
Rush
Rosalind Franklin
Sidney Kimmel
Keck
Miami
EVMS
Loyola
Albany
MCW
Temple
Drexel
Wake Forest
Places I won't be reapplying to for sure:
Harvard
Cornell
Keck
Rush
Places I will be adding (or considering adding) right now:
GW
Georgetown
Rochester
Dartmouth (Possibly)
Albert Einstein (Possibly)
Creighton
St Louis
Oakland Beaumont
Where else do you think I should apply, and what are the others I should definitely cut? I fear that the schools I would have better chances are ones I am reapplying to, which isn't optimal.
Thanks in advance!
