Hi everyone,

Just curious if anyone can recommend a favorite physiology textbook.

So far my course directors have recommended one of the following:

-PRINCIPLES OF PHYSIOLOGY by M.N. Levy, B.M. Koeppen and B.A. Stanton

-MEDICAL PHYSIOLOGY by R.A. Rhoades and G.A. Tanner

-MEDICAL PHYSIOLOGY by W.F. Boron and E.L. Boulpaep

-PHYSIOLOGY by L.S. Costanzo

-REVIEW OF MEDICAL PHYSIOLOGY by W.F. Ganong

Any comments on any of these? Also, I used Human Physiology: An Integrated Approach by Sliverthorn in undergrad and loved it, and thinking of buying it again (wish I still had it!) but it's mad expensive and I'm wondering if it's appropriate for medical physiology.

I'd love to hear some feedback! Thanks 🙂

I used Principles of Physiology by Levy et al in Animal Physiology during undergrad and loved it. It's one of the books I actually read very thoroughly and kept for future use. However, I'm not sure if it's going to be detailed enough for medical physiology. It'll be great as a supplement to another more in-depth text.

Go with Costanzo and never look back. Our med school requires Berne and Levy, which is horrible in my opinion. I have been studying from Costanzo (ISBN: 1416023275) and have been doing well. Almost everyone in my class is using it to truly understand physiology.

NMS only and NMS for everything! Course, NBME, USMLE...... everything! I had Costanzo too. It was much better than the crappy required books, but NMS was still much better.

Physiology in medschool is far more in depth that Physiology in College. You might as well go ahead and sell your undergrad physio books. A lot of perople in my class tend to like and go with Costanzo. I personally use a book that is not on your list. MEDICAL PHYSIOLOGY by Guyton and Hall (Eleventh Edition).
The book is more dense but it definitely explains concepts better than any other physiology that I've ever seen.

Our class profs reccomended Guyton and Hall and host of other books, but I use Physiology by costanzo, I think it is an excellent book! I cannot rave enough about how clear it makes the subject. I am not sure if it pays off on the test (our first was yesterday) but I truly do understand the physiology.

Costanzo all the way... and get her BRS Physiology book too to review before exams. Seriously, the best book and review book out there of the whole series.

Any of these is okay the first time around. However, I highly recommend getting familiar with BRS Physiology (doesn't need to be your first, primary text) while you're studying physiology, so that you'll have an easy time reading it when it comes time for the USMLE. During that last month before Step 1, you won't be wanting to read STAR, Guyton, or any other book with long paragraphs.

Second the recommendation for BRS physio.

I'll chime in

Dr. Costanzo started adding about 15 points to each of my exams about midway through last year. I'd read big costanzo (the one that's about the size of Lippincott's biochemistry) and then take the quizes in little costanzo (the BRS book). Little costanzo is also a good review for when you take pathophysiology and also (I've been told) a good review for when you take the insignificant, little exam at the end of second year... what's it called again?

Unfortunately, I can't recommend a text because I've never looked at one. Ask some M2s at your school cuz they have a good idea about what's going to be on your exam. Good luck!

I had costanzo (because of all the hype on here). It's good, but NMS blows it away, plus it has about 700 USMLE-like Q's with explainations. I gave the Costanzo away and will use NMS-phys for the MLE 👍

can someone give a ISBN for the NMS physio book...or at least type out what NMS stands for? thanks..im trying to compile a list of books to get..

edit: nvm i found it via google national medical series isbn: 0683306030

Certain books are stronger in some topics than others, IMO. I recommend Vander's Renal Physiology for Renal and the BRS Phys chapter for Respiratory.
