Red X / Verification Question

Excuse my ignorance, but did all those with verified apps have the red x's before verification was final? I still have nothing on my app after submitting on 7/5. I was just wondering if I needed to have red x's before verification, or if I could expect to be verified w/o the x's.

You need the X's. They keep you from making changes to your app at the same time they're processing it, which apparently had caused problems in the beginning.
