Hi,

Does it hurt my chances for admission to participate in a regional interview any more than to be interviewed at the school?

For instance, I have been invited for an interview at Boston University on 12/16. They are giving me an option to participate in a regional interview in San Francisco. Should I do that instead and save some money on the airline ticket?

thanks

The advantage of being there is being there.
You can see the schools and feel the freeze. (Sorry, I am from sunshine San Diego) Besides this, you will see the school and the staff, which helps your decision on whether you really want to stay there for 4 years.

You can totally do the regional interview and save you some money.

The downside, as was already posted, is that you won't get to see the campus or talk to other students. Both of those are issues that are important.

I would definately go to New England and interview there. There's only one way to experience the city of Boston, and thats in person (especially if you havent' been there before).

Good Luck!

Both Drs. Kilgore and Polins, the people who conduct the interview, are real nice guys and serve as good indicators as to how nice the support staff is here. If you seriously are thinking about coming here then you should come to the school but if you have your eye on another school and just want to have BU as a backup then go to the regional. Maybe that doesn't look clear. Basically, if you don't mind cold weather then come to the school because it will grow on you. If you go to the regional then you'll experience the school through a laptop.

I would like to thank those who shared their opinions.

This is what I am planning to do: I will opt for the regional interview because BU isn't really my top choice. If I do decide to go there later on, I'll fly out and visit the school then.

Does this sound good?

update: you'll either have Dr. Hutter or Dr. Stout interviewing you in SF...do some research on them so you can ask them questions, ie show interest which will help you get in.

I would say it is better to go BU for interview instead of regional one. At least, you would still plan to study there and that is why you apply. If you go there instead of choosing regional, you send different message to the school. I personaly would feel the school would give these interviewee who actually go to the school higher priorities while they are in the waiting list with other regional interviewee.
However, if your status is strong and at least one school would accept you for sure, then I think don't waste the money.

For me, I personally think BU takes care of their students a lot and it is also a excellent school with good clinic program. Also, I hear from my friend who is in BU this year that the school listens to the students' voices more than faculties. The atmosphere is great with helping each other.

I dont think so. The main reason for regionals is to help out financially challenged applicants. Of course some people may abuse this, and choose regionals even though they can afford it, but I dont think it would make you look like your not interested in the school.

grettlin, who's your friend? Is he/she a first year?

BTW, Dentaldream we have a lot of Canadians here so you might feel more comfortable.

PashaJ. Are you in BU this year? My friend is Richard. He is a D1 student this year.

The whole process costs a lot of money and it is one of the invest. I believe people know about it before they apply. I definitely agree that someone might have financial issue about the travel, but they know this all the way before they apply, don't they? Even I return to the school after quitting the job without income. I would still try my best to make a trip to BU since it is one of my favor schools.

I do not think schools would also care about the cost of the trip. If it is the case, there should be more schools than only BU providing regional interview???

Yeah I know him, though not well. He brings his scooter to class all the time. Winter will knock the Cali boy out of him.

I opted for the regional in Los Angeles. I kinda regret it though becuase I think it might send the wrong message (not very interested). BU is my first choice if i dont get accepted on the west coast.

Anybody know the interviewers for BU in Los Angeles? location?

Drs. Polins and Stout I believe in LA

Which scools offer regional interview? I am sure very few..
