Hello,

Science GPA: 3.37
Cumulative GPA: 3.6
Grade trend: J-shaped because of personal problems. Two years of a 3.7+ GPA (junior and senior years)

MCAT: 515
Not URM

ECs:
Clinical employment: None

Clinical volunteering:
Child life and hospice

Non-clinical volunteering:
Good commitment across a few different organizations I care about

Shadowing:
60 hours

Research:
2 summers and a semester of research experience

I am questioning if it's worth the time and money to apply given my science GPA. I'm only looking at DO schools at this point.

Should I give up or get the science GPA up to the 3.4 range by waiting a cycle and taking more science classes?

ETA: Thank you all for your help. I edited it to make it more vague for privacy reasons but still available for people in the future. :)

Another question:

I really don't need much to get the science GPA up to 3.4.

I could even take two summer Biology classes, get A's in them and get up to 3.4.

Do you think getting up to 3.4 would offset applying in August? (Again, I'm planning to apply DO.)

You have a nice upward trend with 2 solid years. But add DO schools just in case. 3.37 and 3.4 is essentially the same.

I was accepted to 6 of the DO schools that sent me an interview this year (applied to 9 DO, 6 interviews, 6 acceptances)

So DO wise, you're good. For MD, I only applied to 6 in Texas (home state), of which one sent an interview but ultimately rejected.

Congratulations on your acceptances, @BlueScar

I really appreciate you taking the time to post your experience. That was really reassuring during a bit of a stressful evening for me. (I was fairly certain ya'll were going to tell me it wasn't worth the money to try DO and I should try another health field.)

I really appreciate your reply. I didn't know that (bolded).

With your MCAT score of 515 you should receive MD interviews. I suggest these schools:
U Illinois
Southern Illinois
Rush
Rosalind Franklin
Loyola
Medical College Wisconsin
Western Michigan
Oakland Beaumont
Wayne State
Creighton
TCU-UNT
NOVA MD
Miami
Wake Forest
Virginia Commonwealth
Eastern Virginia
George Washington
Georgetown
Drexel
Temple
Jefferson
Seton Hall
New York Medical College
Albany
Vermont
Quinnipiac
For DO schools you consider these:
MU-COM
DMU-COM
ATSU-KCOM
KCU-COM
CUSOM
PCOM
Touro-NY
AZCOM
TUNCOM

School list if you guys have a moment to provide me with any feedback you may have. I really liked Faha's ideas and used most of his/her suggestions. :)

Do you think this is enough DO schools (12)? I don't know how many people typically apply to.

MD:
University of Illinois at Chicago (I live too far north for SIU even though I'd love to go there. I've heard they only take people from southern Illinois.)
Rush
Rosalind Franklin
Loyola
Medical College of Wisconsin

DO:
Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine
Des Moines University
Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine
Michigan State DO
Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine
Kansas City University College of Osteopathic Medicine
Campbell University School of Osteopathic Medicine
Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine
Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine
Lincoln Memorial College of Osteopathic Medicine
Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine
Arkansas College of Osteopathic Medicine

My stats were almost identical to yours (with my reinvention being a post-bacc). Applied to 2 DO schools. Received early interview invites to both. Accepted to one, waitlisted at the other. You have a really good shot, especially at DO.

Can you afford the OOS tuition at Michigan State? Check out the school thread for Lincoln Memorial.
