I know that at least one of the programs I have applied to is having thier interview day Next Friday, and so far I have heard nothing. I assume this means that I will not be getting an invitation, but was wondering if schools notify applicants who are being turned down? I have heard in several cases where applicants never heard back from the schools to which they applied. It seems it would only be courteous as it may be the only thing some poeple get from their application fees.

which school??

when i applied 2 years ago (and didnt get in), some schools were rude enough to wait until may to send an official rejection letter

May!?!?! Did they at least date the letters for April 15th or earlier? Were you on waitlists before you got those letters? I understand that departments get swamped but I bet it's a nightmare to have to wait that long to hear from them.

Btw, I'd also like to know which school is doing interviews next Friday.

Most schools will not send you a rejection letter until much later (it may not be the department's fault-- they sometimes have to go through the grad school). There were a couple schools that I NEVER heard from, which is, indeed, very discourteous, but what are you goignto do. If you are eager to know, you can always call the graduate secretary--they'll usually let you know if all the interview invitations have been extended.

Also bear in mind that some schools don't have just one interview day, but instead have the professors invite people individually.

Well, I guess I'll wait in agony... 🙂

By any chance, would you happen to know some of the schools that tend to do that?

I didn't mention the school because I cannot gaurantee the quality of the information, but the source I have says that UGA is the program holding their interview day next Friday (1/20).

I think most schools wait to send out rejection letters until they are sure they have secured their open spots. If everyone they interview rejects the acceptance, they will have to seek out consolation applicants. Depressing, but true. I applied last year and my rejections didn't come until April, while my acceptances came much sooner. Good luck with your apps :luck:

I am not above receiving a consolation acceptance.

I'll take them any way I can get em!

My understanding is that the University of Washington used to use that system (no interview date, profs just invite students as desired).

Most rejection letters will not come until late April or May...they do this because people have until 4-15 to accept/reject and they may have to scramble to fill their spots. If you weren't invited for an interview chances are slim to nil that you'll get in as a backup.
Typically after you interview the acceptances usually go out within 2 weeks, and most schools are nice enough to say "you're not in right now, but are high/low on the backup list" (I was even told at one school that I was #1 on the list).
If you can't stand the waiting (like I was last year) call the school's secretary and ask if they're done interviewing...they'll know! Even if school's don't have a mass interview day the secretary will usually know if all professor's are done inviting. That way you know and can stop stressing out about that school (you know you're not in).

Good luck all....it'll be over soon!!!!!!!!!!!!

i think it's ridicolous they expect you to wait til may for a letter when you have to get your stuff in on time and pay fees for processing. especially when you need to know where you are going to start looking for housing and getting used to the area.

the whole grad process has been mostly negative for me so far (with the exception of one acceptance)

Congrats on your acceptance forensicpsyd.

Lets hope that we'll all look back on the stress, money spent, and time we put into our applications and feel a sense of accomplishment in the fall!

well if you are proactive you don't have to wait until May...don't just sit back and wait...start calling schools the end of this month and ask when they'll be calling for interviews or if they're done, etc. THe last place I heard from was mid-March for an acceptance, but I knew I was rejected from many because I never heard anything by the middle of February and I called. When the letters came in during May I didn't even bother opening them, and some schools I never even got a rejection letter from.
Sometimes if you just call and ask when interview weekend is then you can eliminate a school (if you're not being invited it's almost a 100% chance you're not getting in).
When you interview....ask them when they'll be extending invites and if you haven't heard from them wait an extra week and call! They are used to us OCD people stressing over applications and surprisingly they do care about the fact that we need to find houses, etc.

that is the point though i am trying to make, it's kind of unreasonable to expect people to be one step ahead of the schools. i understand i can find out in feb/march but that leaves me with about a month to let my loved ones know what is going to happen, plus it's pretty hard to select such a big event in such a short time. i understand what you are saying, and totally agree with you. i am just debating for principle's sake. i just think it's rude to not get a rejection immediately.

If they know they don't want you- they should send it right away.

But... they can't send out the rejections right away, because even after they make offers, the other applicants are not "rejected" yet. They have to wait until they first offers they make are rejected or accepted before they can let the other applicants know the space is filled.

And... students often wait for other schools to send an offer before they accept an offer from another school (at which they me be on the B list, and the school is waiting to hear back from their first pick students (who are waiting to hear from...))... so it is a complicated system.

It would be nice, I suppose if they at least let you know that you are on a waiting list.

"For sure we don't want you's" should go out ASAP as should offers to the top choices... And we should all send our response to offers ASAP to get the process moving for other students.

It is definitely a good thing if people didn't hang on to acceptances too long....last year I rejected right away because I had numerous acceptances and had it narrowed down to 2 schools and I was visiting one school in March and didn't want to accept before I visited school.
I agree that they should send them out right away but unfortunately if they aren't going to accept you their focus goes to the students they are :-(

As it turns out, I got an email from UGA today saying that I had not been invited for an interview for this round, and while they do not send official rejection letters until later in the year, I most likely will not be offered admission.

I am disappointed, but this was not my top choice, and at least they ntofied me.

Sorry about the bad news. Hopefully you'll get some good news later!

Ahhhh, the innocence of the young 🙂 Roughly the second week of September you will all have the "Oh my God, what am I doing here, this is way too much" freak out.
It's funny, I remember being so focused on getting in, that I thought very little about life following the acceptance letter.
Good Luck from a PhD III

You def have a point. Right now its all about getting an acceptance. Then, I just hope I get the chance to freak out about being in a program. Until then, I'll continue to enjoy my grad school virginity.

UCLA does not even bother to send you a letter via regular mail. They have sent me an e-mail. How do you like that? I thought that was unbelievably cheap and rude!

I'm sorry to hear about that psycholytic- I'm sure good news is on it's way!

I read somewhere in another forum that UCLA sends you an email with a link saying "a decision has been made regarding your application"- and then it brings you to another page with some sort of generic/impersonal letter. Is that really how they do it? I find that odd to say the least.

I'm with you. That is cheap and rude, and I would definitely be put off. It's not ever pleasant to get a rejection letter, but I would hope that part of my $50+ application fee could be used to cover the cost of a stamp. Well, as clinpsychgirl said, I'm sure good news is on the way!

That is exactely how they do it. 😱

Thanks for your emotional support. let's see what comes up next. But yes, UCLA does it exactely in the way that clinpsychgirl described.

My comment 👎

Was that this year? I applied to UCLA but still haven't heard anything. Just wondering if I still have a chance...

My experience with UCLA so far has been very pleasant. I received an email last week about their interview wkend and it was a very nice and detailed letter about the upcoming wkend (2nd wkend of Feb). Pam (the graduate secretary) called me later in the day to give me more details about the event. She was very friendly. This is the only school that's contacted me (I've applied to 10 programs).

I do agree that some schools can be very impersonal, and I wish the schools would email those of us who are probably going to be rejected. It truly sucks having to wait until Apr/May but I can predict that if I don't get an interview from the school, I'm not getting in.

Good luck to everyone!

Yes, this year.

Does anyone know if any clinical programs other than the aforementioned programs such as UCLA have sent out rejection notices yet?

Although they have not sent out official rejection notices, if you call Rutgers University, the graduate secretary can give you your application "status." First wave interviews already went out, and there may or may not be 2nd wave interviews, depending on the results of the first wave interviews. However, if you ask for your status, the secretary will tell you if you are a candidate for 2nd wave interviews or if you are rejected.

Good luck, Rutgers applicants!

I got an unofficial rejection notice from UMass-Amherst when I asked the graduate secretary (via e-mail) whether I was on the interview list. She said I wasn't on it, but that my file would remain active for one year if I'd like to reapply next year.

I got rejected from Penn State. That's ok though. I grew up 2 hours from there and the thought of spending 6 years in the cornfields is not so appealing! (No offense to those who do go there - it is a great school!) i don't want to be landlocked!

Hi everyone

Did anyone hear from UCI, USC, UCR, Alliant, Claremont Graduate University ?

that is strange you can get your status over the phone, every place i've tried they won't give information over the phone.

I was really surprised, too, but the secretary told me I would not be offered admission. didn't even verify my identity or anything - just asked my name, looked it up, and then told me... I guess Rutgers is not overly concerned with confidentiality, lol...

Well I received my first rejection today from the University of Virginia-Curry. I'm glad the waiting is over but I am disappointed as it was one of my top 2 schools. I do have five other interviews though so I am grateful for that. 😳

This is being repeated in the interviews thread, but official e-mail rejections went out earlier today for Yale University. If you didn't receive one of these, congradulations.

i just got a rejection from MSPP

I vote all of us sad little Yale rejects have a "Yale is dumb because they didn't want us" party. 😛 ESPECIALLY after we get our other acceptances, lol...

Hang in there, everyone... This is crazy and stressful, but knowing I'm not alone in this mess has helped me so much. Thanks for the social support. 🙂

So I know some people got the "you've probably been rejected" email from Emory's clinical program last week, did you also get the "update your GSAS address" email today? I guess they just want to be *really* sure those rejection letters get to us. :meanie:

i know someone who got a rejection letter from duke last week.

I just received an official rejection notice from Northwestern. 🙁
It was one of my top choices, and the professor seemed pretty encouraging... oh well.

I got rejection letter (postal mail) from UC Berkeley. Although I knew I wasn't in, getting those letters is no fun!
