Does anyone know how this works - when you apply for residency, if you took both the COMLEX & the USMLE, do you have to report both scores to the residency program? I know some allopathic programs don't care for the COMLEX score as much as the USMLE, so do they even see that at all?

On ERAS, you have to check a box (one for COMLEX, one for USMLE) if you want them to report the scores with your application. You will also have to pay $50 each (COMLEX, or USMLE). If you are an MD student, you pay $50 for USMLE. If you are a DO student only reporting your COMLEX, you pay $50 for COMLEX. If you want to report both your USMLE and COMLEX scores, it's $100. (it's a one time fee and subsequent reporting when you get updates/step 2 scores ... won't cost you anything)

If you take the USMLE and don't want to report it, you don't have to report it. Now if a program ask you if you took the USMLE, then it's up to you (and your morals/ethics) whether you want to tell them the truth or not.

You also don't have to report COMLEX scores to MD programs too. Once you see ERAS, you can pick and choose what to report to which individual programs (which letters go where, which personal statement goes where, which program will get your COMLEX, USMLE, or both scores, etc)

thanks, group_theory. very helpful to know. well, hope it stays that way...

The thing to do is talk to individual programs and ask them what they prefer. You'll never go wrong by giving more information --- ie reporting both the COMLEX and USMLE. Programs that over the years have accepted many DO's tend to have developed a "feel" for the COMLEX. The COMLEX is *YOUR* licensing examination. In contrast, most DO students view the USMLE as just another achievement test required for applying to some ACGME accredited residency programs.

Also, depending upon the whims of various state licensing laws there may be advantages to finishing the COMLEX licensure pathway (all three steps) in lieu of the USMLE. Believe me, no residency program will ever care which third step you take as long as you get licensed by your PGY-2 so you can bill in the hospital.

But, ever since the COMLEX became recognized for primary licensure for DO's in all 50 states, some states may get picky if you're a DO and you apply for licensure without all 3 COMLEX steps even if you completed all 3 USMLE steps.
