Can anyone explain how these work? Does a student have to come in and locate a prof who needs help? What different types of positions are usually available? What other sources of funding are usually available or does it just depend on the school. Any info would be helpful. Thanks.

Do you mean post undergrad? Or while in school?

Post undergrad while in grad school.

Have you been accepted to grad school? If so, and you have been given a RAship, they will assign you to a prof.

It really varies by school. In my program, you would generally only be an RA for your advisor. The definition of an RA (what they are and what they do) also varies a lot by program, and also within programs by lab.
