some do, but for the other schools it does hurt you

It won't hurt to have research on your resume and as aceking mentioned some schools prefer research. If you did research, make sure you know what that research was about 😛 ... don't just participate to have something on your resume 🙂

i don't see how it can hurt ANYONE at all?
getting more experience is important for ANYTHING u do in life. i did research (still doin it) and i'm learning a LOT...but at the same time, i know it's not something i want to do for the rest of my life. just not my life style. if i hadn't have done research, i wouldn't have known that that's not really for me.

experiencing different fields of work allows u to explore and figure out what u may or may not like. there is no such thing as a "bad experience" - as many say, cuz u learn from it..and learn what u don't like.

gdluck.
i say try research. it's a GREAAAAT experience.. i feel "special" and "smart" cuz i know how to do a western blot..hahahaha 😛

DDS2BE- which schools prefer research? and is that because they are a research oriented dental school?

just keep in mind.. if research is in your application presentation... you better be able to explain, talk about, and know the in's and out's of what you did... I don't think the status you had in the project that they would be examining under the microscope... but your comprehension of what you were doing... and maybe how the techniques, thinking process, etc could help you in a career in dentistry.

Many schools are researched based... lets face it... thats how schools get grants from the gov't... and just remember dentistry is not just a clinical thing... they're is a wide world of dental research going on ...behind the scenes stuff... and schools want ppl that will advance dentistry as a whole.

I would say many schools will really take a good look at your research experience, particularly if it's notable.

Schools not only teach students, but also advance the field of dentistry through their research. Many of the faculty that you will run into at interviews have dedicated much of their lives to this endeavor. Keep in mind that they are losing out on substantial amounts of money in a potential private practice career to be doing their job at a school.

Not only that, but you have to consider the oncoming faculty shortage that is hitting the dental schools right now. Many schools would love to train future professors and research experience can demonstrate that you have an inquisitive mind that would make a good professor/researcher.

Unfortunately, a good researcher does not always translate into a good teacher. But that's an entirely different issue...

I know Case Western loves people with research. I had a bunch of questions asked about my research I did while in undergrad and after my graduation. I don't really think it makes any difference if a school is research orientated or not. I don't think having a research is your selling point, BUT it is a plus and gives one an opportunity to talk about during an interview 🙂
