At what point is it appropriate to ask a science preceptor (like biology or physics) at Harvard Extension if you can help with their research? If you are comfortable doing so, can you provide an example of what to say? (It helps to picture the conversation or words the same way.)

Something about approaching a Harvard post doc, with a question like, can I be your new lab tech, feels a little funny after just one year - esp. when there are so many people with more experience in the room.
