Countless threads have proclaimed the importance of participating in research when applying to top medical schools. However, no one has ever really said anything about how important the focus of research is.

I'm an environmental sciences major, and the research I am interested in doing may not directly relate to medicine. But, I have had a good deal of patient/physician contact.

Do adcoms show preference to research that is directly medically related?

ditto on that question. My research has been on identifing the function of a protein in slime mold. not so applicable. And although I think the cells are cute, i don't think it counts as clinical experience... ;)

In a nutshell yes. Everything else falls under interesting diversity nonsense they can put in the brochures or brag about during orientation.
