Research in psychology - any benefit?

I'm entering college this fall and I'm majoring in psychology and pre med. I know that students who wish to enter graduate school for psychology do research to make their applications appealing. I'm just wondering that if I did research in psychology with professors out of pure interest, would that be beneficial for me when it comes time to apply to med school or should I just focus on working at a hospital?

If you have a sincere interest in research, you should do that rather than just rack up meaningless hours in a hospital. I personally was a psych major and did a lot of psych research as an undergrad before I did my post-bacc.

Psychology research that adds to human knowledge will certainly be viewed positively by adcomms. Having clinical experience (not necessarily in a hospital) is essential to a successful application. Ideally, you'll do both, but the latter wins out if there's only time for one activity.
