Does anyone know of where I can get money for the summer to do research?
I applied for a summer research grant at my school and I was rejected. Apparently a lot of students applied and there wasn't enough money to go around.

It's so late in the year and so close to summer, but I still wanted to pursue alternative funding. The grant was only for $1800 , and I probably will still do research with my mentor even if it's free. But it would make my life easier if I found a way to get funding.

I'm in the same boat. I'm thinking that we may just have to bite the bullet.

I doubt there's a lot of grant money floating around now to fund medical students doing research. I applied for a grant supplied by the NIH and distributed by the school. They won't announce the results for another couple weeks, but my mentor's program is so ridiculously well funded he said he could pay a generous stipend out of their own budget. :D

So I guess you have to get lucky.

I know it's not what you asked for, but why don't you tutor for cash?
As a medical student, you'll get hoards of neurotic parents flocking to your door.
I make around 1200/month for about 9hrs/wk of tutoring.

PIs don't pay stipends for medical students over the summer?

If you know what speciality you want to go into, that specialty's organizations usually have summer research stipends. Your PI is also eligible for grants based on your participation - the one I'm familiar with is the National Institute of Neurological Disorders & Stroke (F31 IIRC). Google away.

Over 30 buck an hour. Not bad:thumbup: That sure beats what I'm getting paid to do research.

Yea, anywhere between 30-40, and that's through private companies that take a 50% cut. I have arrangements with a couple of student to cut the middle man and get upwards of 50+/hr. I also do research full time, and those 9 hours a week pay more than the 40 hours of research. Problem is you can't quit your day job because tutoring isn't stable- Parents cancel sessions all the time, and assignments usually last 2-3 months.

Edit: Sorry for highjacking the thread.

Did you try contacting your student services/whatever office? Most schools have a website of handout that lists the funding sources med students have gotten in previous years. One school (UMich?) has an extensive, but dated, one available online.

Start calling emailing random places and asking. That is how I got a great position last summer.

Find major clinics in your area and I bet that somewhere on their webpage there is an email to a research coordinator. Email them and ask them about summer internship/research assistant positions.
