I was wondering if any published research that I have before I start medical school (i.e. undergrad and post undergrad job) will play a role in residency selection for a competitive specialty?
The research that I am published in (as of right now) is in Genomic Imprinting. I was involved in determining a certain region of DNA contains the necessary elements to properly imprint a certain gene. The journal is pretty mediocre, nothing special.
Also, I am currently employed studying cis-regulatory elements of the gene Delta, in fruit flies. I would expect that my work should be published sooner or later, but after I am already in medical school. The info for the gene Delta should warrant publication in a decent journal (who knows?).
Both works are directly relevent to development and human problems, so it isn't like I published something that has no bearing on my future plans.
Just wondering if I would be able to use this to help make me that much more competitive.
Well, I'm sure my published research played a small part in matching in Rad Onc this past March. Of course, I was trained as a free radical biologist which is directly related to some of the current radiobiology research Rad Onc folks are doing, too....
