Would med school adcoms perceive research in the social sciences (on HIV/AIDS) to be less impressive than research in the biological sciences? Or would it not matter?

Thanks!

Wouldn't matter. What matters is the level of your participation and what you accomplish.

ok, thanks.

I work part time as a teaching assistant of sorts at a med school satellite campus and our dean's comment was that he would rather see innovative and interesting research of a nature similar to what I am doing (health psychology research) than the same old cell biology research he has seen time and time again from premeds.

I think what matters most is that you can talk intelligently and hopefully passionately about what you did. If you can make it sound interesting and if you can understand some of the broader implications (think- why should anyone else care about my research), then you will be fine.
