I am considering getting certified as a medical assistant so I can work during my gap year(s), however this rubs up against my original plans to do clinical research during that time. I think it would be awesome to get some experience interacting with and prepping patients as well as direct clinical work like doing bp, temp, bloodwork, etc. However I also do not have any research publications under my name yet.

I currently have about 400 hours of basic science research and will be completing a thesis project which will add up to 700-800 hours of basic science work, and no clinical experience yet (hard to find during the era of covid).

Any advice would be appreciated!

Clinical experience. You can get into a med school without research, but you can't get in without clinical experience.
