I was involved in research for one semester at my school. The problem is that it was only about 1-2 hours a week (due to lack of time) and I didn't get to do much, mostly observed. AMCAS stresses that only significant experiences should be included in the application. I'm debating whether I should put down this semester of research. I appreciate any advice. Anyone had a similar problem?

yeah i left out stuff on the AMCAS because of 2 things -
1. My mind just completely blanked since it was an activity I did early on in my college life and so I forgot to put it on.

or

2. I felt the activity wasn't as significant compared to the other activities that I put down on my list. I only filled out 9-10/15 slots.

Now your semester of research doesnt sound all that great...but maybe perhaps you should just so you can say that you were in a research arena observing and learning about research? Not sure, how productive your hours of observing were.

I would list it but make it clear that the experience was superficial, as long as you learned something. Otherwise you might get me or some other research interested person as an interviewer who will be very critical of your research experience.

If this is your only research experience, put it down and tell what you learned from it. Just because you didn't do your own project doesn't mean you didn't learn. I did 20 hours of observation before I started doing work in my research labs, and this was all part of the process of becoming familiar with the techniques.

On the other hand, if you went on to another lab and published papers for the past 2 years, I'd say leave it out.

Thanks for the quick responses. This is my only research experience. My ECs aren't that great either, a few part-time jobs/internships though.
