Residency after med school?

Just wondered if anybody out there is thinking of not directly entering a residency program after med school, but instead doing something else for a while and going back later.

Is it significantly more difficult to get a spot?

I believe it is pretty difficult, but more so with some programs (probably surgery and the surgical subspecialties) than with others (IM, Peds, FP, etc.).

Why do you want to take time off anyway? What about those student loans?
