Can someone please tell me the criteria or rather selection factors for residency? How bout fellowships after an internal med residency?

I have heard that your board scores (step 1 for intern/resid, step 2 and sometimes 3 for fellowship) are the most, if not only, thing that really matters. I envision other things that might be important are your medical school and its location, where you did your 4th yr electives, grades for rotation, AOA honor soc, LORs, and maybe EC/volunteer work.

Thanks.

Of those items I would say where you do your med school counts less unless it is a DO school (unfortunately still the case for allo residencies in some specialties) or foreign. Where you go to school might count if you wanted to do your residency at Harvard or something like that.

nothing really matters except board scores.

same thing with MC admissions: GPA & MCAT.

1. Your interview at the residency. Do you fit in and are you what they want.

2. Board score (step 1)

2B. Clinical rotation evals/letters/grades

3. AOA status (or class rank)

4. research (for some residencys)

5. Everything else (EC's, first 2 year grades, Deans Letter, etc, etc,)

I'd say Jalby's list is about right.
