I am from the Netherlands, where it is difficult to find a residency position. First, it has become an unofficial requirement to do a PhD after becoming an MD, before starting specialist training. The PhD can take up to four years. Second, there seems to be age discrimination, as it becomes very difficult to find a residency position after age thirty.
I was wondering about the situation in other European countries? Difficult or easy to obtain a residency position? Does it depend on the location within a country? What are the working conditions? Is age important, and if so: how much?
I have read that it is easy to get a residency position in Germany, but this is in more rural areas and the training itself is less structured than in the Netherlands.
