I wonder how much a a first year internal medicine resident
MD gets annually? does it chande according to the state in USA ?

The averages in 2000 were as follows:

1st year post-MD $35,728
2nd year post-MD $37,331
3rd year post-MD $39,008

The salary does vary according to area. Some areas with higher costs of living are willing to pay higher salaries, and some internal medicine programs that serve underserved areas (rural hospitals) also pay higher salaries with signing bonuses.

All same year residents in a given institution make the same salary (e.g. a second year medicine, second year surgery, second year psych resident all make the same salary).

At my institution, the following salaries are for 2003-2004

pgy-1 $39,559
pgy-2 $40,425
pgy-3 $41,517

pgy-5 $45,301
pgy-6 $46,769
pgy-7 $48,348

Would those PGY salaries include fellowship? Or is that something different?

And how would I research that?

Here at my institution, the fellows are considered "PGY4s" or whatever level they are at... therefore they will only make 3-4k more than an intern.

Have you guys heard how some chief residents spots pay you an attending salary? They don't at my school (they get paid as pgy4), but a GI fellow was telling me that he got paid an attending salary at a NJ school, I think Rutgers, while he was a chief resident there. He had to go from making 80,000 to back to 40,000 as a fellow.

That's something to consider for fellowship - some are just like Quinn says, PGY-4,5, or whatever, whereas other places may put you in the middle (ie, 1/2 attending pay), or staff physician pay (but that might entrain you into actually working as one, in your given field).

In NYC last year, I got $42600 as a PGY-1 (which was interesting, because that was PGY-2 pay for Mt. Sinai, whereas I was at a Mt. Sinai affiliate).
