I am going to be attending medical school this fall and I was wondering how long the residency is for cardiac surgery, orthopedics, family medicine, and neurosurgery. Thanks
Orthopedics - 5 year residency (plus 1 year fellowships)
Family Medicine - 3 year residency (plus 1-2 year fellowships)
Neurosurgery - 7 year residency (plus 1-3 year fellowships)
Cardiac Surgery - 5 years of general surgery residency plus a required 3 year fellowship before you are considered a real cardiothoracic surgeon
Don't forget that a lot of general surgery residencies are now a standard 7 years cuz they add in 2 yrs. of research. That 2 yrs. is helpful for academic gen. surgery but also for making you more competitive for cardiac surgery, etc.
